Rhine water levels stifle shipping, BASF Ludwigshafen production

Chronic low water levels along key European chemicals shipping artery the River Rhine are having a significant impact on the amount of product that can be transported, according to sources on Monday. German chemical major BASF said on Monday it had been forced to reduce production at its Ludwigshafen, Germany, site. Limited rainfall and heatwave temperatures have caused water levels to fall below 100cm along long stretches of the thoroughfare, with market sources reporting that barges are loading at 50% capacity or below. Other market participants have reported ships carrying chemicals running aground in recent days, and transportation costs soaring as a result of the limited freight capacities. Cambrex net income soars on higher volume

Cambrex (East Rutherford, New Jersey) has reported that net income soared by 60.8% in the second quarter of 2018, to $40.4 million, compared with $25.1 million a year ago. Adjusted EBITDA fell by 12.7% year over year, to $37.2 million. Adjusted income from continuing operations was $24.7 million, a decline of 2.8% YOY. Net revenue for the latest quarter was $152 million, an increase of 13% YOY, which includes a positive contribution of 2% from foreign currency effects, according to Cambrex. The increase in volume was driven by higher volumes of custom-development products, generic active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), and the adoption of a new accounting standard, which accelerated revenue recognition for a portion of the company’s portfolio, Cambrex says. In the first half of this year, Cambrex achieved net income of $64.5 million, an increase of 43.6% YOY. Net revenue increased by 20.6%, to $237 million. “Our recent accomplishments mark significant progress toward our goals...

US Enterprise considers second PDH plant

HOUSTON (ICIS)--Enterprise Products is considering a second  propane  dehydrogenation (PDH) unit given the outlook for  propylene , the CEO of the US-based midstream and petrochemical producer said on Wednesday. "I think there are opportunities for another PDH. In fact, we are working that hard," said Jim Teague, CEO. He made his comments during an earnings conference call. "When we look at how short the market is for propylene, given the demand growth, we think there's a strong possibility we'll build another PDH," Teague said. US-based catalyst producer WR Grace  noted the global shortage  of propylene last week during its earnings conference call. Enterprise had planned  to build a second PDH unit earlier this decade. In 2015, the company said it shelved the plans. Enterprise built its first 750,000 tonnes/year propane dehydrogenation (PDH) unit in Mont Belvieu, Texas.
